Another Super Delegate For Barack Obama
Wed May 07, 2008 at 07:03:00 PM PDT
Tonight on Larry King Live, Christine Pelosi, a Democratic super delegate, indicated that she would endorse the winner of the pledged delegates. For all intents and purposes that is another super delegate vote for Barack Obama.
Christine Pelosi was asked who she favors in the Democratic race. Here is the exchange between John King and Pelosi:
Pelosi: I made my decision on Super Tuesday, February 5th, in San Francisco that I would cast a secret ballot and that I would cast my public ballot for the winner of the pledged delegate count...now I have kept my word and I will keep my word and before Father's Day when I stand for re-election I will announce my endorsement of the winner.
King: The winner of the popular vote at that point?
Pelosi: The pledged delegate count. As a DNC member I voted for the rules that created a nomination by elected delegates and so whomever the American people elect with majority of those delegates will be the person that I endorse for president at that time. So early June, by Father's Day, I will make that decision and announcement and work my heart out for that person.
...
Pelosi: ... And again, for me the decision was I as a super delegate will not overturn the will of the voters. So, three months ago I gave my vote to the American people and I am very confident that whomever they choose will be the person that will be our next president.
The slow wind-down of this race has begun. All that remains is for Hillary Clinton to find a way to bow out gracefully.
UPDATE: Some commenters have noted that Christine Pelosi is already part of the "Pelosi Club", a group of super delegates who have said in the past they will go with the pledged delegate leader. Her previous comments were reported on the Huffington Post. This is from the article:
"Many of us are elected by the grassroots of the party," she said, "And I cannot imagine going home in November to those people and try to phone bank for someone who did not capture the [pledged delegate] vote... We were all galvanized by what happened to Al Gore in Florida."
Pelosi, who has been a DNC member since 1996 and recently authored the book "Campaign Boot Camp," acknowledged being petitioned heavily from campaign surrogates but declined to say whom she would support. She did, however, list different attributes upon which her superdelegate vote will be based: "Who is building a base of volunteers, who is bringing the party together - the best indicators of future performance."
Her previous comments left open the possibility of considerations other than the pledged delegate count. Her comments tonight are much more direct and leave no doubt as to her preference.
